What we grow and When

Crops

700ha of Wisbech Series Grade 1 silt, split over 4 farms within a 7 mile radius of each other. Monmouth Farm is about 1 mile from the North Sea and is about 2 meters below sea level, with the land mainly reclaimed in 1660. Ferry Farm is 7 miles inland, about 1 meter below sea level and was reclaimed in 1632. Newton Hall Farm is from Roman reclamation, and is a more bodied silt. The fourth farm is on a mixture of FBT and contract farming at Sutton Bridge. 10 year average annual rainfall is 610mm (with 12% in August!).

Mustard – all grown for English Mustard Growers Ltd (EMG) which is a farmer cooperative who sell all their mustard seed to Condimentum for Colman’s- 50 miles by road from our farm.  We grow both spring and overwintered White Mustard, the spring variety is called ‘EWM1’ and the winter is called ‘Guthrie’, both which are used to make the hot yellow mustard paste for different markets.

We have a mustard cleaning and drying plant on site which other local mustard growers bring their mustard to, for us to clean and dry it to Colman’s specifications.   

We produce an average yield of 1.6t/ha – equivalent to 5 million 170g Colman’s mustard pots per year!

Sugarbeet – all grown for British Sugar and delivered to their Wissington Beet Factory in Norfolk. 29 miles by road from our farm.  Each sugarbeet contains about 17% sugar. 

We produce an average yield of 85t/ha – equivalent to 700,000 1kg bags of Silver Spoon sugar per year!

Variety: BTS 1915, Wren.

Tonnage: 4,000

Storage: Short term field storage collected by a Ropa Maus, We do have concrete beet pads dotted around the farms if conditions are very wet.

Vining peas – sold through a growers cooperative called Holbeach Marsh Cooperative.  These are standard garden peas and petit pois peas for the frozen market.  They are harvested by the co-ops pea viners, washed and frozen within 150 minutes at Kings Lynn (15 miles), Boston (20 miles) and Long Sutton (2 miles). 

We produce an average yield of about 5t/ha – equivalent to 350,000 1kg bags of frozen peas per year!

Variety: Trophee, Idalgo, Oasis.

Wheat – sold to local merchants and seed houses.  65% of our wheat is producing seed wheat, multiplying stock for seed breeders, for other farmers to then buy from those seed breeders. 35% goes as ‘feed wheat’ for animal feed. 

We produce an average yield of 12t/ha – equivalent to 4.25 million loaves of bread per year!

Variety: KWS Dawsum, KWS W450, LG Beowulf, LG Skyscraper, LG Typhoon, Graham.

Tonnage: 2500

Storage: 1,500 ventilated floor - surplus sold at harvest.

Potatoes – all sold through a growers cooperative called Nene Potatoes for mainly the supermarkets.  Our main variety is Maris Piper, but we also grow Lanorma and Markies. 

Irrigation is used to produce consistent quality for our customers year in year out.

We produce an average yield of 45t/ha – equivalent to 11 million portions of fish shop chips per year!
